Biography
Slam is a Scottish DJ and production duo consisting of Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle. Originating from Glasgow, they have been among the most influential figures in the European techno scene since the early 1990s. They are widely known not only as producers and DJs but also as the founders of the highly respected techno label Soma Quality Recordings.
Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle met in the late 1980s in Glasgow. Their shared passion for club music—especially house, techno, and acid house—led them to form Slam. At that time, the UK club scene was rapidly evolving under the strong influence of music coming from Chicago and Detroit, where house and techno were originally developed. The duo quickly became involved in organizing club nights and building their reputation within Scotland’s emerging electronic music scene.
In 1991 they founded Soma Quality Recordings, which soon became one of the most important techno labels in Europe. One of the label’s most significant milestones came in 1995 when Soma released the debut single by the French duo Daft Punk, the track Da Funk. The record later became an international hit and helped launch Daft Punk’s global career. Over the years, Soma has also released music from notable artists such as Adam Beyer, Luke Slater, Perc, and Gary Beck.

During the 1990s Slam gained international recognition as producers. Their early sound blended house and techno influenced by Detroit, later evolving into a deeper and more hypnotic techno style. One of their most famous productions is Positive Education, released in 1993 and widely regarded as a classic of 1990s techno. Other important releases include Lifetimes, Eterna, and Stepback.
Alongside their studio work, Slam built a strong international reputation as DJs. They have performed in leading clubs and at major electronic

music festivals around the world, including Awakenings, Time Warp, Sonar Festival, and Creamfields. Their DJ sets are known for energetic storytelling and seamless transitions between techno, house, and minimal techno.
In 2006 the duo launched Slam Presents Platform, a project that includes a series of events and a sub-label dedicated to promoting new techno artists. Through these events they have hosted and collaborated with leading figures of the techno scene such as Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, and Carl Craig.
Over more than three decades of activity, Slam have become one of the most respected names in techno. Their influence extends beyond their own productions and DJ performances to their role in shaping the global techno scene through Soma Quality Recordings and their continued support for new artists. Thanks to their consistency, innovative production style, and dedication to electronic music culture, the Glasgow duo remains a key force in the international techno community.
